From Ryan Colkitt, Head of Product:
A few weeks into my time at Wilqo, one thing is clear: Charlie is a powerful, comprehensive platform. The opportunity now is helping each customer unlock its full potential in a way that works best for their business.
The first weeks at any company are a blur of introductions, demos, and learning a new vocabulary. At Wilqo, they’ve also been a crash course in what’s possible when a mortgage platform is designed from the ground up rather than bolted together over decades. I want to share what has stood out to me so far.
It starts with the people
The team at Wilqo is amazing, and I don’t use that word lightly. From day one, people have made time to walk me through the platform, answer my questions, and share the thinking behind decisions that were made long before I arrived.
Wilqo was founded in 2020 by mortgage industry veterans, including Larry Huff and Dr. Ivan Darius, the co-founders of Optimal Blue; Ty Jenkins, the founder of Docutech; and Jeff Benjamin, former SVP of Sales at Ellie Mae. That depth shows up everywhere. This is a group that has lived the pain points of mortgage lending firsthand, and they set out to fix what is broken rather than add another layer on top of it. That shared mission is contagious, and it has made joining the team feel less like starting a new job and more like joining a cause.
Wilqo is also independent. We aren’t dependent on outside investors or any mortgage lender, so no one outside our customer base is driving our roadmap. Our priorities are set by the lenders we serve and what they need to succeed.
Charlie is built for where lending is going
Charlie, Wilqo’s Production Optimization Platform, is built and fully capable today. It brings point of sale, loan origination, AI-driven workflows, task management, and business intelligence together on a single, cloud-native code base. It breaks the work of a loan into atomic-level tasks, automates the flow between them, and shows exactly where time and money are being lost. The next generation of mortgage origination isn’t on a roadmap at Wilqo. It’s in the product.
What I’ve found is that the technology isn’t the constraint. The pace of change is. Every operation runs on more than its system of record: years of checklists, spreadsheets, and personal fixes that keep loans moving. Ask a team to change all of that at once and you take away the efficiency they’ve worked hardest to build, even if what replaces it is better. That isn’t the market falling behind. It’s people protecting what works for them, and any platform that wants to earn their trust has to respect it.
You choose the pace; we bring the path
So we’re building the transitional pieces: on-ramps that let a lender adopt Charlie in a way that fits how their organization works today. Nothing about the core changes. This isn’t a lighter version of the platform. It’s the full platform, with a smoother way in.
That gives every customer a choice about how much change they take on and when. Forward-looking lenders can move straight into a fully modern process on day one. Lenders who want a measured pace can start closer to what they know and turn on more capabilities as their teams are ready. Either way, we’re guiding them, and the destination is already built and waiting.
Perfection is about what you take away
One of my favorite quotes, from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, is that perfection is achieved not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Perfection takes time, and that line sums up how I see our work. Our job isn’t to give operators more screens and more features. It’s to remove work from their day, so no one has to build a workaround to get a loan closed.
The pieces to do that are built. The LOS and POS live in one platform, so borrowers and lenders work in the same space with no uploading and downloading between systems. Business intelligence is embedded, so teams can spot small issues before they become big ones. And the ecosystem keeps growing, with document and compliance partners like DocMagic and Asurity, and mortgage insurance pricing through PMI Rate Pro available right inside Charlie.
Now we sit down with each customer and design the puzzle that works for them. Every lender’s picture looks a little different. Some want to start with a unified borrower experience. Others want to take manual steps out of processing or get real visibility into their pipeline. Because the pieces already fit together, we can start with what matters most to them and keep taking work away from there.
It’s only going to get better
Those who know me know I’m not easily impressed. But what I’ve seen from a capabilities perspective has me not only impressed, but genuinely excited to be a part of it, and I’m convinced it’s only going to get better. Every day, this team comes back to the same question Wilqo was founded on: how do we drive down the cost to originate a loan? Faster cycle times, less manual effort, better accuracy and compliance, and a better experience for borrowers all flow from that one goal.
If you’re a lender wondering how to modernize without betting the business on a single leap, I’d love to talk. The future of mortgage origination is closer than you think, and you don’t have to get there all at once.
